Hiccups

Hi,
Does anybody remember when the hiccups go away or if they do? Most days they don’t bother me, but if I’ve eaten something in the last hour, up it comes and I get choked.
Angie

Sandyjo, Helen Marshall sent you a hug.

Now that you mention it, I had hiicups, but forget what was causing them, but they eventually went away. Do you have a feeding tube? Maybe that was my case and too much air was getting in and from lying down or swallowing too much air when eating by mouth?

I don’t have a feeding tube anymore. The hiccups don’t last as long as they used to. I think they’re caused by the cisplatin. It’s good to know you don’t have them now. That means I can expect them to go away. Everytime I ask my Med Onc about side effects from the chemo, he says it will take up to a year (my platelet count is still low so I bruise easily).
Angie

Oh, that may explain it. I had cisplatin.

Sorry Angie I have no idea, as I never suffered from them. I think probably though it is your body trying to get back to normal! I know that the more i can eat the more bodily functions I have. I am back on track and starting to do the cream soups and Tim Hortons Ice caps( so soothing) and it’s staying down. Think finally this case of thrush is on its final legs! Hope the hiccups go away real soon for you and am praying for your follow up PET to be good and you get the NED status that you deserve Hugs Val

Thanks Val

There is a cure that I have used many times and it does work. Get someone to hold their hands tightly over your ears and slowly drink half a glass of water. I guarantee you it works. It is something to do with internal air pressure but dont ask me how!

Thanks Helen,
I’ll try it.

In the same vein …I put a straw in a glass of water. Then I plug my ears with my thumbs, plug my nose with my fingers, and swallow three drinks of water. (Never failed me.)

I’ll try it. Makes me laugh to picture that in my mind.

Yes Angie, that’s the special magic …it make us laugh and it works.
Someone turned me on to the ear-nose-3 gulps of water technique decades ago. I could even do it when I had way way way too much alcohol.
Like Helen said, it has to do with internal pressure.
Anyway, doing it with a straw (now doesn’t that sound kinky?) means I never have to ask for assistance.
......Cause an assistant….would just remind me how funny this looks.
Hope you are getting relief from those hiccups.

Had hiccups after both chemos (cisplatin) for a few days. Read somewhere it can be from steroids in anti-nausea pills.

Our remedy in life before treatment was to put a tsp. of sugar on your tongue and then bite into a lemon wedge and swallow. But wouldn’t dare try that right now with the sore throat and mouth sores!

Thanks Kenny,
I’m four months post and thought they’d be gone by now. Oh well, yours and Pauls went away so there is hope.
Angie

I thought they never would go away and now I can’t remember how long they lasted…I’m thinking a month or two.

Thanks Pat,
It’s great to hear they go away.
Angie

Try rubbing your forehead between and just above your eye brows. I get them real bad from heart surgery and It’s the only thing that stops them. good luck

I’m also thinking now that I re-read this post that mine were caused much by the poor swallowing technique as a result of damage done to throat. I even now get a coughing fit from dryness or a cold or something and I hiccup and burp at the same time. To stop one or the other I give myself the stupid hiccups….Never heard the “Forehead” one…I gotta try that – make sure there’s still something up there.

Have heartburn sometimes and take pepto bismo or antacid tab but no hiccups.

I’m doing Prilosec for the heartburn. It really helps.
Angie

Thanks,I will give it a try

Boy, I hope some of these suggestions help, Angie! I really hate getting hiccups, they’re so annoying. Amazing how much weird crap we have to put up with post-treatment. Hugs and hopes for no hiccups! Ann

I can’t help you on that but I am thinking about you and said a little prayer for you.
God Bless

Hiccups can be a side effect from steroids or a sign of reflux. They did have me on a med for the hiccups that makes you a bit sleepy but worked well. Hiccups will eventually go away. May need to discuss your symptoms with your treatment team. Take care Angie.
